How To Get Rid Of Pet Stains On Carpet

Hello Lovelies, how has your weekend been? Mine, not so great. I've been dealing with a stomach bug for about a week now and spend the entire Saturday in bed! YIKES, that's the worse, isn't it?

So while we were on vacation our "Senior" Newfoundland Bruce had a diarrhea accident on the carpet in the bonus room. BIG DAWGS, BIG MESSES!!! Our House-Sitter could not get all the stains out, so by the time we got back we had 2 yellow stains the size of  fists right smack in the middle of the room. I shampooed the carpet with my Hoover several times like a mad women, but no luck. The stains had set, being that is was now a good 10 days after the fact. We tried about every carpet cleaner on the shelf including Spot Shot, Proxy Clean, Laundry stain remover.... No Luck!
But here is what did work....GOOD OLE VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA

So today I want to share this awesome cleaning tip for "pet stains on carpet" that I found on the internet. Yes, yes, I know, I know....very boring stuff ...but pin it now and one day you will be happy you got this info ! LOL...

STEP BY STEP PICS
Here is one of the stains, it was about the size of a large fist

The miracle cure....white vinegar and baking soda

Pour enough vinegar on carpet to soak the stain,
then sprinkle baking soda on top

Cover area with plate and let it sit for 1 to 2 days.
Vacuum up baking soda. That's it!!!!

I took Before and After pictures on different days,
so the lighting is not the same..sorry

and here is our sweet old Bruce, pushing 11 1/2 years old.....wow....that's old for a big guy!

Take care everyone...until next time
Christine

  1. Actually, I'm glad to know what works for getting out pet stains. I have some upstairs on our carpet, but they are pretty old. I doubt they would come out now. Luckily, my dog is very well house trained now, but there can always be upset tummy accidents (like you said). I will try that method for sure! Hope you're feeling better. I hate being sick with a stomach bug! I'm always making deals with God to get me through it faster. LOL!

    1. Hi Kelly, actually you might still try it on your old stains. The website where I found the tip said it worked on old stains as well. Yeah poor Brucie never used to have accidents, but he is an old guy now and nobody was there to let him outside...poor baby!!!! I am feeling better today...thanks for asking! Tummy bugs are the DEVIL...arggg

    2. We used this on a carpet the previous owners let dogs pee all over it, first on a spot and it completely obliterated it looked brand new and it sat for a long while smell and everything gone. then tried bigger sections of the carpet...it works like bleaching the hair or how hair color works there seems to be like a heating chemical reaction.

  2. I had good luck with that remedy as well when our newfie/black lab was ill and left a similar but much larger stain on our carpet. I had to buy a gallon of white vinegar and a very large box of baking soda but it did the trick! Your dog is adorable!

  5. Isn't it amazing just what we may have on hand.. that are old products of time past, that still works like a charm.. I use baking soda many times over in my cleaning routine to help keeps things that should be white, white.. Like the fridge handle..
For also hard to rid stains, pet stains included, you can use vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in equal parts to help make those stains disappear instantly. Almost, right before your eyes.
Love these simple ideas! Great tips to know.

  7. Awesome tip! We were dog sitting and the dog peed on our carpet. Luckily we caught him in the act so we were able to get it up quickly. I blotted it all up then put baking soda over it then vacuumed it later. You can't even tell where he went or smell it. You can read my post on it here if you like.

Hopefully it will work. Also I'm featuring you tonight on the new linky. This is a great tip. Your friend, Linda

  34. He is such an adorable dog! I've been begging my husband for years to get a dog and he finally broke! We got the most adorable German Shepherd and he is the cutest addition to our little family. Unfortunately, we had a similar incident to yours and I have a giant mess to clean up. My husband is out of town, so I'm hoping to get it done before he gets back so he'll never know. I've tried this trick and it worked but there's still a little bit of discoloration. Do you think I should try doing it again or should I break down and call a carpet cleaner? http://www.thecarpetguy.net.au

    1. Hi Kat, thanks for leaving me a comment on my blog Little Brags (the carpet cleaning post with vinegar and baking soda). I tried to reply directly to your comment but you came up as a non reply blogger (Google glitch). To answer your question, I would definitely try the vinegar and baking soda again and make sure to leave in on for at least 24 hours. In my experience I had better luck with this than calling a cleaner and paying a lot of money. Good luck!

  35. I use white vinegar now for 8 years to clean anything that gets on my carpet. The guy that installed my carpet told me to use this. I have had two yorkie puppies for several months now and I use it for any accidents. I have not used it with the baking soda but sure it wouldn't hurt.

They are capable of making much worse messes than any dog or cat I have ever had. I will have to try this stain removal carpet cleaning method on the mystery stain in our living room.

  60. Hi. I live in a small apartment and over time I have accident spots from my dog in several areas. Is it necessary to cover the areas with plates or would paper towels work too? Is there a particular reason for plate covering?
